TONE — Renovation of an entrance hall

Commissioned by Toneelhuis and in collaboration with graphic designer Jelle Jespers / Ntrakt, i.s.m.architecten reworked the neoclassical front of house of the Bourla Theatre by stripping away the visual noise that had accumulated over the past decades.
The new interventions follow clear lines. They reinforce the existing architecture, or connect to it in a modest and precise way.
Six new frameworks, integrated between the existing columns, introduce six functions into the entrance hall: stairwell, lift, kitchen, poster wall, service entrance and box office. A mobile, multifunctional piece of furniture is placed centrally and functions alternately as an additional ticket desk or as seating.
In a second phase, i.s.m.architecten designed an introduction room in the hallway surrounding the theatre.
